The Hayloft

Constructed in 1866 and located on an area belonging to the “Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica”, the Hayloft initially served an agricultural purpose. Throughout the years, the structure has served different purposes under different owners, to end up abandoned in 2019.

Under the studio titled Technological Design for the Architectural Requalification, technical design solutions and a new fuction were proposed to the existing Hayloft structure.

As a new function for the Hayloft building, and inspired by its surrounding environment, a bio-exhibition space detailing the fauna and flora of the Via Appia Antica Regional Park is proposed. A place to learn about the delicate ecosystem of the park, the plant life present, native and renatured, and the animals inhabiting the region, especially the endangered existing species. In today’s world, with the ever-rising global warming effects and the endless human exploitation of lands and natural habitats, we aim at raising educational awareness as well as investigating and documenting past and present plant and animal species found in the park. The proposed program brings together history, archeology, and nature in an educational framework, aiming at offering its visitors a unique and informative experience.
